Sandy Says: There’s No Shame in Being Safe

A new study – Current Practices in Occupational Health and Safety Sustainability Reporting – revealed that five organizations listed on the Corporate Knights’ 2011 Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World reported more than 10 work-related fatalities in a year – with one organization reporting 49 in a year while another reported 70 worker deaths in a 3-year period (2010-2012). (See a news item about the study on p. 18 of this issue.) I actually could feel my blood pressure rise as I read that these companies, which had what I thought were outrageously high fatality rates, were considered “sustainable.” How sustainable can a company be when its employees […]

Overcoming I2P2 Challenges with Technology

With the federal Injury and Illness Prevention Program (I2P2) legislation brewing since 2010, companies have been in a steady holding pattern for a few years, wondering if OSHA will ever push the legislation through, thereby drastically changing the safety requirements for American employers. With Obama’s second term secured and Dr. David Michaels, assistant secretary of labor for OSHA, articulating that passing I2P2 is his top priority in 2013,  it’s likely that this change will occur sooner rather than later. See Also: Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Training Preparing for the implementation of I2P2, however, presents two main challenges. First, since the exact wording of the legislation is not yet available, […]

Getting Comfortable at Work

I had just started a new job at a rapidly growing company. Their growth was so rapid, in fact, that they didn’t have an office for me. Management worked out a temporary solution by placing a desk and computer in an empty, previously unused room. While the space was bare and spare – there was nothing warm and cozy about this temporary office’s concrete walls and floor – I didn’t mind that. What I did mind was the room’s back door that led directly to the warehouse. This door offered a shortcut between the main office and the warehouse. The fact that I was now camped out in my new […]

Who Says "Go?" Is Safety Led or Abdicated?

Over the past several decades, business has decentralized many specialty roles; leadership is not one of them. In most organizations, one person or small group sets the tone and establishes the priorities and values for the business. If these recognized leaders also lead safety, it becomes an organizational value. If they delegate safety to someone else, it sends an unmistakable message to the organization. Safety can still be viewed as important, but it is not in the organizational mainstream. The message is, “Let’s run our business and, by the way, let’s be safe too.” See Also: Workplace Safety Management Best Practices Many organizational leaders came up through the ranks and […]

Forget Me Not: Place Eyewashes in These Easily Forgotten Locations

Our eyes provide us with our primary means of experiencing our surroundings. Commonly referred to as our windows to the world, each eye is a complex organ, comprised of 40 components and more than 100 million receptors. They also are delicate, and therefore susceptible to injury from a range of common workplace hazards such as dust, flying debris, chemicals and harmful vapors. Protecting employees’ vision is extremely important, and most employers have initiatives in place to do just that. OSHA also provides guidance for eye protection, calling for employers to equip workers with safety eyewear that offers suitable protection from workplace hazards. While corporate safety initiatives and national standards together […]
