NIOSH Puts Health Hazards to Bed at Metal Furniture Manufacturer

Employees of a metal furniture manufacturer asked the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to evaluate health hazards at their workplace. They were concerned about exposures to welding fumes and dust from powder painting and grinding operations. Some employees reported breathing problems, excessive tiredness and dust in their noses at the end of their work shifts.  The company had 146 employees and was located in a 110,000-square foot building. Employees’ work included cutting, bending and welding sheet metal to form end tables, lockers and beds. Most employees spoke Spanish as their primary language, and most were members of a union. The company had a safety committee, which met […]

Whistleblower Complaints: Avoiding Discrimination Charges through Documentation

You are the safety director of a medium-size company. The superintendent of the production department comes to you with a complaint about a problem employee, Clumsy Clarence. The superintendent wants to fire Clarence, but Clarence is keenly aware of OSHA. You fear that before he is fired, Clarence will get wind of what is happening and, in an attempt to make himself “bullet proof,” file a safety complaint with the safety enforcement branch of OSHA. Firing Clarence then would become much more difficult, as he could complain to the “whistleblower” branch of OSHA that he was discriminated against for being a whistleblower, in violation of section 11(c) of the OSH […]

Sticky Stories are Safety Savvy

On a cold and windy day, a worker crossing a street at his workplace was struck and killed by a truck. The driver said he was backing the truck because an exit was blocked and he never saw the worker. It looked as if the worker had been holding his coat up to block the cold wind and did not see the truck. It was speculated that the worker was used to traffic coming from the other direction and may have looked that direction, and not toward the backing truck. No one witnessed the event.  See Also: Workplace Safety Management Best Practices Safety professionals and the supervisor conducted an investigation […]

The Break Room: Broken Glass

Laura Walter, Senior Editor In 2007, I lived just down the street from a McDonald’s in Lakewood, Ohio. On July 7 that year, I heard sirens in the neighborhood but didn’t think much of it. When I passed McDonald’s later that day, I was surprised to see the store was closed. The building exterior was crossed with police tape, and one of the front windows was broken. I speculated that the store had been subjected to vandalism or a similar crime. As it turns out, reality was much, much worse. That morning, a young man named Nathaniel Williams Jr. entered the store and fatally shot 26-year-old Robert “Shawn” […]

No Pride in Safety Record for Food Company

There appear to be several bad apples in the Pilgrim’s Pride stable of facilities. Christopher Chin probably thought it only would take a second to remove the piece of cardboard from the hopper at the Pilgrim’s Pride facility where he worked in Canton, Ga., last October. Reaching in to grab the cardboard, Chin became caught in the machine and was killed. According to OSHA investigators, the machine should have been fitted with a guard to keep employees from reaching into the machine while it was operating. OSHA issued four serious safety violations to Pilgrim’s Pride for failing to conduct annual periodic inspections of the energy control procedures since […]
