Preventable Occupational Diseases Can Happen To You

The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates that more than 2 million workers die each year from a wide range of work-related diseases. Moreover, ILO estimates that 160 million cases of non-fatal work-related diseases occur each year. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 207,500 workers experienced non-fatal occupational diseases in 2011. These staggering numbers affect workers in a plethora of working environments. Workers often incorrectly perceive risks when the consequences are potentially life-changing. Clearly the phrase “It won’t happen to me” needs to be expelled. The Italian physician and teacher Bernardino Ramazzini, known as the “father of occupational medicine,” wrote his definitive text, De Morbis Artificum Diatriba (Diseases of Workers), […]

Keeping Europe’s Workers Safe, Now and In the Future

The economy and its impact on occupational safety and health loom large in the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work’s (EU-OSHA) 2012 annual report. In the report’s foreword, EU-OSHA Director Dr. Christa Sedlatschek argued that making a strong economic and ethical case for workplace health and safety is more important now than ever. “At the moment we are seeing the effects of the economic crisis,” wrote Sedlatschek. That crisis includes cuts in spending on occupational safety and health (OSH) across the entire European Union. But “smart companies are aware of the importance, in tough times, of maintaining their levels of support for workplace health and safety. Eventually we […]

Infographic: What Motivates Employees?

A new infographic takes a closer look at what motivates today’s employees and found some surprising results. Cash is apparently not always king – in fact, 71 percent of respondents said that the most meaningful recognition at work had no monetary value. The infographic, released by Badgeville, reveals that a strong work environment and workplace culture is vital to employee motivation. Ninety percent of workers said they considered a “fun” work environment motivating; 83 percent said recognition for their contributions was more fulfilling than rewards and gifts; and 76 percent claimed opportunities for growth as the top reason for remaining with an organization. “In every age demographic, opportunities for growth […]

What Matters More, the Swing or the Score?

I have an ongoing dispute with many people in the EHS community about workplace safety. They are convinced that we should measure actions but never the end result – injuries. I respectfully disagree. First, let them tell their side of the story. It goes something like this: “It is a mistake to use injuries as the focus of attention, measure of success and trigger for change. Instead, safety should be focused on the reporting of hazards, OSHA compliance and training. If all those things are done well, we will have a safe result.” Here is my side of the story. All those things need to be done, and done well, […]

Company Cited For Violence Hazards When Client Kills Employee

Stephanie Ross, a mental health coordinator from Lakeland, Fla., was afraid of her client, Lucious Smith. Smith had a history of criminal activity and was known for exhibiting violent behavior. On Dec. 10, 2012, Ross was tasked by her employer, Integra Health Management, to visit Smith for a required face-to-face hospitalization risk assessment in which mental health professionals encourage patients to seek medical and psychological care and to take prescribed medications. During that home visit, Smith stabbed Ross. She ran out of his house, screaming, and he chased her down and stabbed her over and over again. She later died at a local hospital.  In citing the company, OSHA made […]
