OSHA Launches Initiative to Protect Temporary Workers

According to the latest statistics from the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, fatal work injuries involving contractors accounted for 542 – or 12 percent – of the 4,693 fatal work injuries reported. In conjunction with the observation of Workers’ Memorial Day, OSHA sent a memorandum on April 29 an initiative to further protect temporary employees from workplace hazards. ILO: Prevention Is Key to Tackling Occupational Illness

Work-related diseases, such as those caused by exposure to asbestos, claim an estimated 2 million lives per year worldwide. The International Labour Organization is calling for an “urgent and vigorous” global campaign to tackle the growing number of work-related diseases, which claim an estimated 2 million lives per year. “The ultimate cost of occupational disease is human life. AIHA Observes Workers’ Memorial Day 2013

This year’s Worker Memorial Day especially was poignant because of the recent loss of so many in the explosion at the West Fertilizer Co. In the United States, April 28 is the anniversary of the establishment of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in 1971. OSHA protects workers by instituting and enforcing occupational safety and health standards that remove workplace hazards and maintain safe working environments.
