Practical Preparedness for Workplace Violence, Part 1: Warning Signs

In an April 9 workplace violence seminar hosted by Allied Barton Security Services in Cleveland, Brent O’Bryan, SPHR, offered an overview of workplace violence categories and potential warning signs. O’Bryan, vice president of learning and development at Allied Barton, explained to a full room of seminar attendees that 2 million Americans are affected by workplace violence each year, and 458 fatalities from workplace violence occurred in 2011. Even so, most workplaces do not maintain formal workplace violence policies – according to a 2010 survey, O’Bryan said, 70 percent of responding companies lacked workplace violence programs. VPPPA: On the Quest for World-Class Safety Excellence

For nearly three decades, the Voluntary Protection Programs Participants’ Association Inc. (VPPPA) has represented the employers engaged in OSHA or Department of Energy (DOE) Voluntary Protection Programs, which recognize employers and workers in the private industry and federal agencies who have implemented effective safety and health management systems and maintain injury and illness rates below national averages for their respective industries. While VPPPA membership also includes organizations that are not pursuing OSHA VPP status, most are. Leadership Support for Safety: A Self-Contradicting Term

Leaders should lead, not just support. If someone besides the leader is leading safety, the leader has abdicated. Whatever the true leader is leading will always be more important in the minds of the workers than what is led by a delegate. This does not mean the leader shouldn’t confer with the safety professional and use his or her expertise to guide leadership activities. It means the leader and the safety professional should not trade roles. See Also: Workplace Safety Management Best Practices One challenge is that many leaders have themselves been promoted from specialist to generalist. They started out in a specific field that is critical to the organization […]

Five Tips to Help Introverts Navigate Work Relationships

In a March 2012 TED Talk, “The Power of Introverts,” Susan Cain says, “Our most important institutions – our schools and our workplaces – they are designed mostly for extroverts, and extroverts’ need for lots of stimulation.” So how can employers help make introverted and extroverted workers alike comfortable, and how can introverted workers work effectively in a potentially extroverted-biased work environment? According to Laurie Helgoe, author of Introvert Power: Why Your Inner Life Is Your Hidden Strength, nearly half of the American work force is comprised of introverts. She offers five tips to help introverts navigate the workplace and work relationships: 1. Get what you need to do your […]

Sandy Says: Carpal Tunnel Blues

As I sat on my back patio with a cup of coffee on a late morning that more resembled May than March, I was in a bitter and salty mood (not a good flavor combination). Yes, the coffee tasted wonderful. Yes, the smell of the earth carried with it a whiff of spring. Yes, the sun was warm on my face. And all I could think about was the fact that I had to lift the coffee cup with two hands because neither one of mine was operating at full capacity. You see, I had a major flare-up of carpal tunnel inflammation in the past 2 months and nothing I […]

5 Ways Employers Can Promote a Bully-Free Culture at Work

Don’t tolerate bullying, period. If your workplace has a problem with bullying, set a zero-tolerance policy and stick to it. Follow through by terminating employees who bully others and refuse to stop.   Culture change starts at the top. Ensure the CEO and company leadership is on board when it comes to creating a bully-free culture.   Encourage workers to report bullying. If the work force feels comfortable reporting bullying with no fear of retaliation, you will build a stronger culture overall.   Don’t protect bullies. Too often, company leaders maintain loyalty to bullies based on work performance or personal connections. Realize that a bully can damage morale and productivity […]
